Late To The Math Rock Party: My Impressions of Battles’ Mirrored

By Brian Castleberry
December 23rd, 2008

Battles has taken math rock into the age of Animal Collective and Hot Chip. There is as much frantic, acid-addled noise here as there is futuristic electro, but they fall into neither category.

Late to the Party: On Finally Discovering the Youngblood Brass Band

By James Brownsell
December 10th, 2008

I like to pride myself on my ability to discover bands before they break. I derive great pleasure by then sharing these discoveries with friends. But with the Youngblood Jazz Band I appear to have arrived over a decade late to the party.

Awakening The Zombies

By Brian Castleberry
December 9th, 2008

For sure, the sixties were a flourishing time for rock. From Dylan to the Beatles to Hendrix, an incredible foundation for creativity was set in place, and thanks to an ever-growing youth culture, there would be plenty of time and money to support the even more radical changes to come in the seventies. As we’ve [...]

Celebrating Arthur Russell: 5 Essential Cuts

By Rick Sawyer
November 8th, 2008

Arthur Russell has a back story that a French novelist would love. A gay man from rural Iowa who moved from one metropolis (San Francisco) to another (New York City), following an artistic lodestar (Allen Ginsburg), harboring his own secret genius that would move people to tears one moment and be forgotten the next, ending [...]

Dhani Harrison Channels the Dark Horse

By Stacey Allen
October 22nd, 2008

Through a combination of a new album and a rather meticulously designed photo shoot, for a brief moment I could almost imagine it was a different era and one of my musical idols was still young and making new music… all courtesy of his progeny.

September 16th, 2008

In my senior year of college - when I was still ridiculously caught up in having every drum break that existed on record, a buddy of mine sent me a track via AIM simply titled “MLC - In My Life” and told me to check out the huge open drums at around the 1:45 mark. [...]

Old Music Made New: The Avalanches Rediscovered

By Stacey Allen
August 29th, 2008

Thanks to a misfiring synapse a few weeks ago, I was left obsessing over The Avalanches’ 2001 hit, “Frontier Psychiatrist,” for several days. It wouldn’t leave my brain until I finally gave into it. As I was too lazy to walk into the other room and grab the CD, I typed it into a Google [...]

The Nerds: World’s Greatest Cover Band

By Nancy Lichtenstein
August 23rd, 2008

I first saw the impossible in the summer of ’91 at a late, great Jersey Shore club called Tradewinds, which was one of the best concert venues in the tri-state area. Like most great things in New Jersey, it was razed to put up McMansions during the last real estate boom. Even more pathetic, [...]
