I was saddened to wake up this morning to the news of Jim Carroll’s death. A poet of the highest order who also found success as a punk rocker in the early 1980s, Carroll is best known for The Basketball Diaries, a raw, harrowing, and exhilarating account of his high school years addled with heroin and hustling.

When Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs released the original Under the Covers compilation back in 2006, they stuck faithfully to songs that had influenced them from the 1960s. The record was successful enough to reunite the pair once again, transforming for a second time into their alter egos of “Sid and Susie,” to take a stab at some of their favorite tunes from the ’70s.

I as recently hipped to a YouTube music video by the Sons of Maxwell that takes aim at United Airlines, who damaged lead singer Dave Carroll’s high-end Taylor guitar and callously refused to take responsibility, rejecting his claim for reimbursement.
