Great list! Two more: Steve Earle's version of "Telephone Road" from "El Corazon" (2001). This is a completely different version than Rodney Crowell's song and I'm pretty sure that when Crowell's cd came out, there was even a third version by an earlier songwriter. I don't know much about the Telephone Road shibboleth, but Burton Chapman has a book called "Telephone Road" that contains material about the Southeast Houston blues/R&B recording labels Gold Star and Sugar Hill. Might be a good thread to expand.

The second really good song is Mary Chapin-Carpenter's "Houston" from her cd "The Calling."
