The editors at JamsBio like to think of ourselves as music fans first, not critics, and that’s the sensibility we strive for at JamsBio and that we seek in other sites as well. That’s why we’re so jazzed about Damn Fine Day, a site that each day profiles a deep album cut that’s been overlooked, but deserves a place in everybody’s collection. In the name of spreading the gospel about great music, we present “The Daily Deep Cut,” where we add our two cents about the songs featured on Damn Fine Day. Once you read our unique take, we’ll send you over to Damn Fine Day so you can stream the full track and download it if you like. Sometimes we might even suggest another deep track from the same album or present some other novel twist on what their hawking.

“Tumbledown”
(1992, Blanco Y Negro/Def American )
I was an early convert to the thrilling aural assault that was The Jesus and Mary Chain. In the seventh grade my friend Jerrad turned me on to Psychocandy and I’ve been a fan ever since. I vividly remember the day when I purchased JAMC’s 1992 triumph Honey’s Dead. It was during a particularly difficult summer in New York City in between my sophomore and junior years in college. Things were looking grim between my girlfriend and me and I would often take long walks up and down Broadway to think things through, my trusty Walkman as my companion. During one of these strolls I decided to detour into the massive Tower Records on West 66th Street. Inside I happened upon Honey’s Dead and picked up a cassette copy so I could immediately take in the treasure on my outdated listening device. I ripped open the plastic wrapper, popped it in my player, jacked the volume and let the Reid brothers take me away. The opening lines of “Reverence” perfectly captured the feelings of this lonely, angst-ridden 20 year old kid: “I wanna die just like Jesus Christ / I wanna die on a bed of spikes / I wanna die come see paradise.” It was a much needed remedy to my self-pity, a loud, squalling musical rampage to take the edge off. Today’s Damn Fine Day highlights “Tumbledown,” a fine deep cut from Honey’s Dead that’s often overlooked in favor of the more cutting “Reverence.” It’s a doozy, so I suggest you head over to Damn Fine Day to partake in the glory of prime JAMC. Just maybe it’ll provide a much needed catharsis. |
