With the close of 2008 fast approaching, I thought I’d add a little twist to the typical year end lists (which, by the way, is forthcoming from the good folks here at JamsBio) and give a run-down of 12 artists and bands that I feel deserve to have a breakout year in 2009. Some are familiar veterans who should be even better known, while others are rookies who who should be the next big thing or buzz band, as it were.

I’d love to hear your picks for underappreciated artists due for a breakout in 2009, so send them my way in the comments section.

Los Campesinos!

Los Campesinos!

This Welsh sextet released not one, but two amazing albums in 2008. Chock full of bratty, ramshackle indie-punk-pop, you’d be hard pressed to find music more fun and oddly uplifting than what’s found on Hold On Now, Youngster and We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed. With titles like “We Are All Accelerated Readers,” and “Don’t Tell Me to Do the Math(s),” Los Campesinos! have created the perfect soundtrack for hyperliterate indie kids with senses of humor. A perfect antidote to the cloying intellectualism of bands like the Decembersists and the sappy self-absorbed melodrama of bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Los Campesinos! ply enough humor and wit to offset what at the core is pretty heavy emotion. The boy/girl vocal sparring of Gareth and Aleksandra (like the Ramones, all band members have taken Campesinos! as their last name), the tinkling glockenspiels, violin, and chiming guitars mesh to create, as AMG describes, a “thrilling madcap whirlwind of sound, words, and voices that by the end leaves you feeling like you’ve been engulfed in an indie pop-driven hurricane.”

Frightened Rabbit

I can’t say enough good things about this Scottish quartet. Their 2007 debut, “Sing the Greys” was a solid collection of lo-fi sloppy punk pop. Their 2008 follow-up, The Midnight Organ Fight was a giant leap forward; a confident powerhouse of clever hooks and theatrical lyrics. “You won’t find love in a hole / It takes more than fucking someone you don’t know to keep warm,” Scott Hutchison sings on “Keeping Yourself Warm,” an admonishment to an ex –girlfriend. The song builds on a steady keyboard and guitar riff to a fist-pumping climax with Hutchison exhibiting a vocal range that would make Chris Martin jealous. In a fair world, Frightened Rabbit will enjoy the widespread success they deserve. Look out Coldplay, there’s a rabbit on your tail!

Shearwater

Shearwater

While not quite new (having released their debut in 2002), Shearwater is poised for a breakthrough with Rook. Built around the otherworldly voice of leader Jonathan Meiburg, Rook is a beautiful record that evokes the lush, classically rooted music of Brian Eno and Talk Talk with just enough aggressive outbursts to keep things interesting. Strings, woodwinds, guitar, percussion, and brass combine with Meiburg’s haunting vocals to create a suite of lush, richly textured mini-epics. Fans of Jeff Buckley, take notice: Shearwater has picked up the mantle.

Gentleman Jesse and His Men

If I didn’t already know, I would swear that Gentleman Jesse’s debut was recorded in England in 1978, produced by Nick Lowe, and mentioned in year end lists next to the Jam, Buzzcocks and Joe Jackson. When the twentysomething Jesse sings that he was “born in the morning and lives in the wrong time,” he wasn’t kidding. This kid should have been plying his wares thirty years ago. At 32 minutes, Introducing Gentleman Jesse is packed with enough hooks to last an entire career. This is pure power pop that just might get you digging into your crates and dusting off your old Jonathan Richman records. That alone guarantees Gentleman Jesse a spot on this list.

Oneida

Oneida

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Inspired equally by the wild punk adandon of the MC5, the restless experimentation of Faust, the stoner riffs of Blue Cheer, and the proggy noodling of Deep Purple, Oneida have been releasing consistently great (and greatly varied) albums for the last ten years. Their live shows already a thing of legend, the Brooklyn based trio burst onto the scene with the ear-splitting assault of A Place Called El Shaddai’s and never looked back. While things got a little tamer on subsequent releases such as The Wedding (2005) and Happy New Year (2006), Oneida’s adventurous spirit has never wavered, a fact clearly demonstrated on 2008’s sublime Preteen Weaponry. Comprised of three extended tracks, the album touches on many of the band’s stylistic strongpoints (from acid rock to post-punk) unfolding in a suite-like manner that’s guaranteed to blow your mind.

These New Puritans

These New Puritans

If there was any justice, These New Purtians will eclipse Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and Arctic Monkeys as the UK’s reigning kings of the still surging post-punk revival. Taking their cue from Wire, PiL and The Fall, These New Purtians, although clearly derivative, still manage to sound fresh. This can be chalked up to the surging, almost danceable rhythms that infuse the terse songs from the band’s 2008 debut, Beat Pyramid. I’m looking forward to more great music from These New Puritans in 2009.

Cullen, I think you may be listening to music in odd way if you describe the way something sounds through magazine given genres. Not fair to the many sounds music can have.

Bob said:

I would add Australia’s Josh Pyke to that list.

No Ugly Duckling?

You should do some research into them. The spiritual sucessors to De La Soul, so much so that they even supported them on tour.

That’s funny I wrote about these same bands, but the title of the article “Boring Bands that I would most likely kill myself to, if I had to hear them again”

Cullen said:

Ben,

What kinds of music do you listen to? Please tell me it is all 4/4 or 6/8 timed, 80-120BPM, and played in e-minor, a-minor, or C-sharp.

If you want me to be more specific, don’t click the links if you don’t find strained male vocals, erratic detuned drumming, and synth overtones pleasing to the ear.

Bodymore said:

except Los Campesinos. And Ugly Ducking has been around since 2000. I think they would have broken a long time ago.

All this article proves is two things:

1) The author has terrible taste in music.
2) I will never visit this website again.

Drunk Robb and The Shots (Punk)

I like Office from Chicago as the next break out band…they’ve been hovering around that status for 2-3 years now with some real success along the way. Pop rock with an ear for composition and riddim….

Jump Back Jake plays raw soul-flavored rock and roll with dance grooves and horn lines that tout a modern writing approach. Bringing together the traditional sounds of the south with a no lack of attitude, Jump Back Jake aims to bring a country-funk southern revolution to a brand new audience.

MellowTalley – While I absolutely adore BTMI!, I feel they’re probably not going to get much bigger than they are. Though, word on the street is that their new album (Scrambles) is going to be incredible. Jeff Rosenstock definitely has a way with music, so this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

I feel like Four Year Strong are absolutely going to blow up. Awesome stuff

Tom said:

Holy fuck, this is a collection of awesome artists! Thanks, you rule.

This guy is great. He composes, plays, and records all his own music and it is wonderful.

Great selection of new artists. “Rook” is easily one of the best albums I’ve heard all year.

Cullen, you’re a fool.

Temudgin said:

Utterly predictable progressions and hooks throughout. I love music, but each of these sounds like a parody of an already established song from artist that already did it better. Hopefully ppl will realize this before they become over-appreciated.

Seriously – aren’t people sick of bands who are ifluenced by Coldplay, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley? Come on! These bands are talented, but they have nothing new to offer…yawn…

6. Clues (Montreal)
7. Mucca Pazza (Chicago)

omg, i like a few of these songs but they sound too much alike. What you need up there is some of The Expendables, they are somewhat popular but they deserve more press.

Regarding Frightened Rabbit: Not bad, but it takes more than clever explicit lyrics for me to buy an album.

People who comment just to say things like “You have terrible taste in music! I’ll never come here again” — are they actually 12 years old, or only mentally and socially 12 years old? Do they really think they sound “cool” when they denigrate other people’s tastes? Do they not realize that no one in the whole world except their mommy cares what they think or do? Most people realize that once they hit 21 or so.

Yes, this is a list of bands that reflects a certain type of music appreciation. You may enjoy some or all of these bands as well. You may enjoy none of them. That’s how taste is. We adults will go ahead and just appreciate that someone took the time to share what he considers bands worth talking about, whether we like every band on here or not. Thanks for passing along the recommendations, Douglas.

Ooh, but what about thenewno2?

I agree with Cullen…

if all those bands are so special… why do you have to add a refrence to other bands to give them credit on each description?

best underrated artist of the year? M. Ward

Los Campesinos! have 7 members, Neil, Gareth, Tom, Ollie, Alex, Ellen and Harriet. Therefore, they are not a sextet.

this was actually awesome
and for those who say this author does not have a taste in music is crazy
actually listen to the songs, hear where he coming from.
These songs are simply amazing.
I have gotten every artist on this list on itunes atm and there all fantastic.
Way to go man!
thanks

Sounds like a bunch of music that your college roommate would try to convince you was good. Nothing outstanding, nothing that makes you sit up and say, “Wow.” There’s a reason why they’re not THAT appreciated.

great job !

I liked all the artists. I am def going to download some tunes ASAP. Thanks for introducing me to love is all and these new puritians. Whoever wrote this made my week :)
