I appreciate and agree with the majority of your list (especially #1), but to me, the preeminent version of “Red House” is the 1970 New York Pop Festival version (linked below).

In a list of Hendrix’s best performances, I feel that is second only to “Machine Gun”.

His whole Isle of Wight performance (get the DVD) is my favorite Jimi…crazy good! Puts modern rock and experimental, indie, prog, noise bands to shame!

I wasnt lucky enough to see him in concert and i have yet to listen to all of his music but what ive heard so far is amazingly great! guess i need to keep listening and enjoy it!

Jimi was one of my favs. I was lucky enough to see him live on a couple of occasions, and it was always an electrifying experience. He connected with the audience in a way many other artists didn’t. It was almost as if there was an aura of music around him wide enough to include those in the front of the crowd.
What a waste.

When I saw the title of this article, the first thing that came to my mind was “Machine Gun”. I clicked through, fully expecting it to not even be on the list, but to my surprise, there it was, at #1, right where it should be.

Without a doubt, one of the great guitar performances of all time. Pure blues. Rage, sorrow, and beautiful affirmation of humanity in the face of senseless war. As relevant today as the day it was played.

Great that you included the best “Red House” and the always relevant “Machine Gun”. However the best version of “Hear My Train a Comin” is from Berkeley.

After you’ve listened to the live “All Along the Watchtower” from the Isle of Wight Festival a few times you can never hear the studio version again without feeling cheated.

“Little Wing” is the only song that, although each time played a little differently, Jimi always sang perfectly.

These lists are always a matter of personal taste, of course, but I would strongly encourage every to listen to anything live from 1969-1970.

I won’t argue with anything music-wise on the article, but the assumption that Hendrix loathed the Vietnam war is at the very best a complicated assumption. Many friends tell his anti-communism at the time and that the US should “fight the commies” anywhere. Of course it is hard to swallow the incoherence of being a flower-power idol AND anti-communist, war supporter, but that’s what art is made of, isn’t it?

Happy birthday to the greatest, most influential guitarist ever, and my personal favorite musician ever! Among the many, many Hendrix cuts I love, a rarer gem is the blistering “Room Full of Mirrors” jam from the purple box set of recent years. Incredible! Happy birthday Jimi, hopefully the Experience is jammin’ in heaven now with Mitch having recently joined Jimi and Noel on the other side…
