Dan Deacon Dreams Up the Ultimate Round RobinBy
Nadia Collado
Dan Deacon has one colorful mind. For those of you who have yet to hear, Deacon’s autumn tour, which will premiere in Boston on the 2nd of October, is going to be one of hell of a ball. The “Round Robin” Concept Tour, as it’s cleverly titled, consists of 2 nights, 29 artists, and one slightly strange but undeniably good shtick: the round robin. At each show, the bands will set up their gear around the perimeter of the venue, giving way for the audience to stand in the center of their circle. Then the first band will play one song and pass the torch to the next band in line. The purpose of this is for the audience to become very well acquainted with each act. After all, if they want to see a full set from one artist they must stay for the entire thing.
But no worries, ladies and gentleman, both nights have been tactfully designed to attract very specific crowds. “Eyes Night” will include the more folksy, experimental, noisy bands (such as Lexie Mountain Boys, Beach House, and Wtz Hearts), while “Feet Night,” my personal favorite of the two, has acts that are known to inspire dancing, such as Deathset, Future Islands, and none other than the man of the hour, Mr. Dan Deacon. There is also, a third group, called the “Weird Round,” and they will play at random throughout both nights. Some might consider this annoying but I find it absolutely ingenious. To the best of my knowledge, no one has done this before – not in recent memory, at least. If you have a chance to catch any of the gigs (which is actually pretty slim considering this a 14 date tour), do so because you can rest assured that it will be total chaos. And I mean that it best possible way. “Eyes Night”: Beach House “Feet Night”: Dan Deacon “Weird Round”: Mark Brown Baltimore Round Robin Tour: 10-02 Boston, MA – Massachusetts College of Art and Design (”Eyes Night”) |
