We all remember the days when MTV actually stood for music television instead of bizarre reality dating shows, sweet sixteen birthday parties and god only knows whatever else they play nowadays. Thankfully, some genius created YouTube, so instead of rolling our eyes at the ridiculous material displayed on what is supposed to be “music television,” we can now venture over to our computer and pick one of our favorite music videos we’d like to watch.

Whenever I start to reminisce about my favorite 90’s music videos, these are the top 10 that come to mind.

#10 “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam
These guys definitely made sure the video matched the meaning behind the song. The word clippings and troubled youth images that flash on screen put a mesmerizing spin on the video. And if you watch Eddie Vedder sing, he actually looks just about as crazy as Jeremy.

#9 “Criminal” by Fiona Apple
This video was pretty simple with its retro theme and the fact that it looks like it was filmed in the basement of “That 70’s Show,” except Fiona added a bit of sexiness that livened it up.

#8 “November Rain” by Guns ‘N Roses
This video was different and original because it had a whole story behind it (as it probably should have considering the song is over 9 minutes long). But aside from the tragic wedding story, I love it simply because I miss seeing Slash at his best: wailing on his guitar with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth at all times.

#6 “Scream” by Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson
This was actually voted #1 on the top 10 list of most expensive music videos ever made, at an estimated $7 million. It looks like Michael and Janet are dancing around in Outer Space.

#5 “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden
This would have to be the second scariest music video ever made, next to Madonna’s “Bedtime Story.” The creatures with their giant eyeballs will give you nightmares for days. But again, I give it props based on effort and creativity.

#4 “Creep” by TLC
Doesn’t this video make you want to dance around in silk pajamas? I love how T-Boz, Left Eye and Chili all wear different colored PJ’s to color coordinate the video.

#3 “Bedtime Story” by Madonna
This video didn’t get as much hype as it should have, because it has to be one of the scariest and eccentric music videos ever made. Although the effects are a bit bizarre and frightening, it’s actually kind of cool. I have to give Madonna props on this one because it took a lot of effort to make and was actually voted one of the top 10 most expensive music videos at an estimated $5 million dollars.

#2 “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak
Back in 1991, Chris Isaak was the envy of every man as he rolled around on the beach with a topless Helena Christensen. This is without a doubt one of the sexiest music videos of all time.

#1 “Crazy” Aerosmith
Although Aerosmith’s other videos for “Cryin’” and “Amazing” (also starring Alicia Silverstone) were great too, the “Crazy” video takes the cake. Growing up in a catholic school, my twelve-year-old self used to dream of sneaking out the bathroom window, hopping in a convertible with Liz Tyler and driving off to the nearest strip joint.

Honorable Mention 1: “Today” Smashing Pumpkins
Doesn’t this video make you want to jump in on the ice creaming truck painting party fun?

Honorable Mention 2: “Heart Shaped Box” Nirvana
Although this video was slightly bizarre, I always liked the bright artistic scenery and Cobain’s nutty facial expressions.

You are right. MTV doesn’t really fit its original name anymore. The “Scream” video does look expensive when it really doesn’t need to be. A song that creepy doesn’t need much more horror.

I would add:

Blur – Coffee & TV (How cute is that milkcarton!)
Radiohead – No Surprises (Spellbinding)
Weezer – Buddy Holly (Happy Days woo!)
Prodigy – Firestarter
Aphex Twin – Windowlicker (Many women, one man’s scary face)
Madonna – Frozen (She turns into a horse)
Bjork – All Is Full of Love (Robot Lesbian Bjorks!)
Tool – Stinkfist
Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
RHCP – Otherside

And probably loads others I can’t remember…

The thing about the “Bedtime Story” video is it’s so scary yet you can’t look away.
