OK. Nobody likes to admit they fancy a Britney Spears or a Backstreet Boys song, but the truth is, when a so-called “horrible” song comes on the radio while driving in your car, you roll up your windows, and quietly sing along.

I believe that the following 10 songs are absolutely horrid, but they’re so horrid that you have to love them. They’re catchy lyrically (even though the lyrics aren’t brilliant), and musically, these songs make you want to dance around your bedroom in your underwear.

These videos are in no particular order.

“Gimme More” by Britney Spears
This is one of Ms. Spears’ newest “hits.” There’s absolutely nothing smart about this song, except for the catchy, repetitive beat.

“I Kissed A Girl” by Katy Perry
I’ve never kissed a girl, and I don’t want to kiss a girl. Even so, this song turns me on.

“Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake
No offense, but I think Justin Timberlake is an egotistical… I’ll stop there. But, c’mon, you can’t hate the guy… he brought sexy back.

“Quit Playing Games With My Heart” by Backstreet Boys
I loved these boys as a pre-teen. In fact, they were one of my first favorite bands. This song was practically an anthem back in 1997. What makes this song even more “horrible” is the music video. Just look at these yummy boys drenched in the rain… oh, please.

“Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson
American Idol makes me want to vomit in my mouth. However, this song and artist did come from the worst reality show ever to become a massive star. The song is perfect for angry girls who can’t stand their ex-boyfriends. Go ahead, sing along.

“In Da Club” by 50 Cent
“In Da Club” brings me back to my high school days. I remember when this song hit the airwaves, it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. At the time, 50 Cent was Eminem’s child. Awe, memories. If you’re sensitive to vulgar language, don’t watch the video below.

“Tainted Love” by Soft Cell
Hands down the coolest 80s song to sing along with, though very embarrassing. Plus, this song always reminds everyone of Coneheads.

“Complicated” by Avril Lavigne
This song got so much radio play that I knew the lyrics in a day or two. I hate it, but if I happen to hear it on the radio, I admit I’ll sing along for at least the first verse.

“She Hates Me” by Puddle of Mudd
The story of everyone’s life. This is one of the most annoying songs that you just have to sing along to. Girls, just switch “she” to “he” while singing out loud.

“Butterfly” by Crazy Town
“Come my lady come, come my lady… you’re my butterfly, sugar baby…”
Admit it. You’ve sang this song at least once in your life.

Nice! I agree with your GPs especially Crazy Town’s disasterous song. As much as I dislike that track, I’m the first to sing it when I hear it.

And I can admit that ABBA songs are my own personal Guilty Pleasures. hah shhhh! Don’t tell anyone.. right now, I’m singing Dancing Queen as I type this. OH MY!

Great work!

Two Princes by the Spin Doctors! Thats my fave one :)

wow, i like a few of these songs immensely (in da club, complicated, tainted love, and since you’ve been gone) and i’m ok with others (sexy back and butterfly). but other than butterfly i don’t feel guilty about any of them. however, my facination with limp bizkit’s cover of george michael’s faith leaves me decidedly sheepish. nice post.

I don’t feel guilty singing any song….unless it’s from a “toy” band like Aqua or The Cartoons….

Saying that, I used to Love “Doctor Jones” by Aqua… =/

Wow! I really love a lot of these as well. I think I might do a “guilty pleasures” post myself, and I’ll be sure to link to you!

i have the first nelly album, which i listened to incessantly in the sixth grade. i still like it a whole lot more than i should. i still like anything on the radio from about 1999 to 2002 a whole lot more than i should, really…

No, never. Ever. Have I EVER even came close to even lipsyncing one of these atrocities that society likes to call “artists”’s music. Then again if you like the sound of money and annoyingly simple major chord progressions or “beatz”, I guess it would be music to your ears. But I’ve been around music my whole life and these things annoy me whereas someone who doesn’t know how to read a treble clef and grew up listening to pop music on the radio might find it engrossing.

I’ve been obsessed with Two Princes recently since I heard it on my local radio station and I’m ashamed to admit that I do sing along to quite a few pop songs if I hear them :/

A lot of the ones you listed are some of mine. Although I don’t consider “Tainted Love” a guilty pleasure; I fully admit to listening to it.

so your pretty much saying you like a bunch of crappy pop songs, wow. The whole point of calling it a guilty pleasure, is cause you feel guilty for liking it, and are concerned what other people may think. That means that you base your decisions on whether some one else will like it or not. That means your not even a person but just another vacant lot of a soul with no real opinions or interests of your own just drifting from fad to fad.

Douglas said:

Whoa, Ralph. Easy now. I think we all know what a guilty pleasure is without having to define it so literally. Am I sometimes embarrassed that I love Avril Lavigne? Yes? Do I really care if people know I like her music? Nope. But I’d still classify it as a guilty pleasure b/c deep in my psyche I feel a little guilty for listening to it when I have Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan sitting on my iPod waiting their turns. So props to you, Desiree, for sharing your guilty pleasures.

Kinga said:

Mine is definitely Wham – Last Christmas. I can listen to it all year long! lol

Nadia said:

You’ve just inspired me to write about my guilty pleasures. I have plenty.

Desiree said:

Thanks for defending me, Douglas.

Ralph:
I know what good music is, and all of these songs aren’t actually GOOD “music.” It’s just some repetitive beats, and awful lyrics. But I call them my guilty pleasures for different reasons. Perhaps one… or a few… of these songs just remind me of friends and a good time we had (which is the case). By no means is this the type of music I listen to for inspiration. It’s just fun times… nothing to take offence to.
