The Family BusinessBy

This week saw the release of new albums by Jakob Dylan and Teddy Thompson. Both have dads who are rock legends: Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson. Every time a famous musician’s offspring takes up the family business, I try to imagine how daunting it must be to fill those shoes. I often wonder why children of superstars use the same last name as their rock star parent(s). Can Jakob Dylan ever in a million years come close to the genius of his father? Seriously, by the simple virtue of sharing some of Bob’s DNA, Jakob is light years ahead of most musicians, but the shadow cast by his father also makes it near impossible for him to have a career in music without being compared to his dad. When he was the lead singer of Wallflowers he had at least had a cover. Having gone solo, his last name and his physical and musical resemblance to his father betray him. Things are a little easier for Teddy. Sure, his father Richard is a cult hero among folk-rock fans (having led the legendary Fairport Convention and continued with a stellar solo career), but his fame is far more narrow. Considering Teddy’s mom, Linda, is Richard’s ex-wife and former singing partner, maybe their son was destined to become a musician. That said, like Jakib, Teddy shares a strong vocal and songwriting resemblance to his father, which makes his journey to success a little more difficult. I happen to enjoy Teddy’s work, but since Richard Thompson is still going strong, is there really a need for both? Of course, children following in their parents’ footsteps is an age-old tradition. However, it’s probably more common for plumbers or cobblers to pass on the tricks of their trade than a superstar rocker. But there are many well-known examples: THE GIANTS – the children of legends have it the toughest. The bar has been set really high. Ziggy Marley – He had a hit in the 1980s, but could never set himself apart from his dad, Bob Marley. Since Bob is no longer with us, Ziggy’s uplifting brand of reggae was certainly welcome, even if it was a little safe.Sean & Julian Lennon Julian & Sean Lennon – Julian hit it big in 1984 and quickly faded into obscurity. I believe he’s still releasing music, but his days in the spotlight are long gone. His half brother (and son of Yoko), Sean, is a fixture on the indie rock scene. He’s released some solid albums that a unique personality but are clearly imprinted with John’s influence.Lisa Marie Presley Lisa Marie Presley – Her dad was the King. Based on her bland roots rock, she does not live up to the royal title of Princess. Wilson Phillips – The Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, while Phillips’ parents are John Phillips and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas. Serge Gainsbourg – While only a cult star in the U.S., Serge Gainsbourg is a national hero in France. His daughter, Charlotte adds a new twist on her father’s sultry pop styles. (She’s a great actress as well…starred in “The Science of Sleep,” among other films).COUNTRY MUSIC – This is a pretty robust category with the children of country stars doing pretty well out on their own. Roseanne Cash - She’s had a long and fruitful career and while her dad, Johnny, has played an important role in her career, Roseanne’s sound is all her own. Shooter Jennings – As the only child of country singers Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Jennings had moderate country success with his single “Fourth of July.” Relatively new to the scene, the verdict is still out on the younger Jennings. Hank Williams, Jr. & Hank Williams III – The son and grandson of country legend Hank Williams, both have become known in country music circles. Of course, Jr. became a breakout star with his theme for Monday Night Football, while III appeals to the younger generation with his country-punk leanings. Justin Townes Earle – The son of outlaw country rocker, Steve Earle, Justin just released his debut album and he shows a lot of potential. He’s taken the best elements of his father’s songwriting style and the future looks bright. Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) – Not much needs to be said about the unfathomable success of country one-hit wonder (Achy Breaky Heart) and mullet superstar, Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter. Just ask your kids. JAZZ Natalie Cole - She earned her biggest hit with “Unforgettable,” a tune her father made famous. To ensure her own success she exploited her roots by singing it as a duet with her dad (who was dead at the time)! Nancy Sinatra – Ol’ Blue Eyes’ daughter had a smash hit with “These Boots Are Made for Walking.” She also recorded some stellar records with legend Lee Hazelwood in the 1960s. Wynton, Branford, Jason, Delfeayo – The four immensely talented sons of jazz pianist, Ellis Marsalis. Talk about a family business! Each plays (and is a master of) a different instrument: Wynton – trumpet; Branford – saxophone; Jason – drums; Delfeayo – trombone. OTHERS Jeff Buckley – The son of Tim Buckley, Jeff released on of the greatest records of the 1990s, “Grace.” Both father and son possessed incredible vocal styles with a range and passion rivaled by few. Their songwriting prowess was also impressive. Sadly, both died way too young: Jeff in drowned in 1997, he was 31 ; Tim overdosed on heroin in 1975, he was 28. Rufus & Martha Wainwright – The offspring of folksters, Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus and Martha are both talented and successful singer-songwriters. Rufus has already amassed a rich discography of wonderfully rich and sophisticated orchestral pop music. Liam Finn – Son of Crowded House lead singer, Neil, Liam shows much promise with his debut, “I’ll Be Lightning.” Surely more well crafted songs to come. Inara George – As one half of the duo The Bird and the Bee, as well as a solo artist, the daughter of late Little Feat founder, Lowell George, is a budding talent. Her diverse musical adventures make her a rising star. A few that didn’t make the cut include: The Nelsons (twin sons of Ricky Nelson); Kelly Osbourne (Ozzy’s bratty daughter); and Baxter Dury (son of English new waver, Ian Dury of the Blockheads fame). Am I missing any? Let me know!

Jeff Buckley is amazing. I can only imagine what his father must’ve been like. Good thing Liv Tyler didn’t venture into the music biz… |
