American Idol Stars: Is there a recipe to success?By
Rachel Burke
Did you ever notice how some contestants who win American Idol seem to fall off the face of the planet after the season is over? Then there are other Idol winners who become huge successes. Ever wonder why this happens? There’s no doubt about it, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson are not only beautiful but extremely talented. Underwood covered Heart’s “Alone” during one of the Idol episodes and it was such an amazing performance that Simon Cowell said to her, “I’m going to make a prediction: you are not only going to win this competition, but you’re going to sell millions of records.” And she did just that. Clarkson has also sold millions of records, and she’s received several Grammy Awards as well. To be quite honest, she deserves it. Her vocal range is absolutely amazing, and she blew just about every other contestant away on Idol’s first season, although Justin Guarini did come in a close second. So why is it that artists such as Clarkson and Underwood make it big but artists such as Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks seem to disappear off the face of the earth? Is it because Clarkson and Underwood are more marketable since they’re young, attractive women? Or could it be that the majority of people in society who vote for their favorite American Idol contestant simply don’t know how to accurately judge who is the most talented? It seems to be unanimous that Chris Daughtry was much more marketable than Taylor Hicks. Daughtry was a young, attractive artist with a unique sense of rock and roll style that America loved. Yet, for some strange reason, Hicks won the fifth season of American Idol. Hicks was dropped by his record label J. Records soon after his Idol victory, while Daughtry is constantly played on radio stations all over the country and selling millions of records. It was a similar situation with Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. Studdard won the second season of Idol, however Aiken was the star who took over the public eye once the season ended. Fantasia Barrino hasn’t had much press attention either, with the exception of her Lifetime documentary about her life story and her stint on Broadway. As far as radio airtime goes, she’s nowhere to be found. There’s no doubt that Barrino and Studdard both have incredible voices, but what is it that made them less marketable than Underwood, Clarkson and Daughtry? Jordin Sparks and David Cook, who won the most recent seasons of Idol, received a large amount of publicity after their successes. Could it be because they’re both young, attractive, marketable artists? Or could it be because they have a good songwriter on their payrolls and society likes catchy tunes? Everyone has their own opinion as to what drives the success of artists and why they often fail. It could be a popularity contest based on the best-looking contestants. It could depend on who’s writing the songs for them and how good they are (or aren’t). It just doesn’t seem to make sense that if the majority of society is voting for one artist, why that same majority of people wouldn’t buy their albums once they secure a record deal. I guess we’ll just never know.

I have a simple opinion on this. The person Americans are willing to call in on a competition show and vote for are NOT always the same person Americans are willing to spend their hard earned money on when music shopping… Bruce said:
I agree with Meghan. A few thousand people voted hundreds of times for Taylor Hicks, and he won. Those votes did not translate into CD sales. His CD was promoted as much as anybody else’s, and it tanked. A small segment of the population changed what should have been the fair outcome of that season. It hasn’t happened again since, but I don’t know that it couldn’t happen again. Jon said:
It is a mystery to have Idols voted to the top yet no one buys their music. For example Syesha Mercardo has a lovely voice, she’s attractive, but she had the worst iTune sales and made it to number 3. And Brooke who was voted off before Syesha had the highest iTune sales out of all the females, left before Syesha. Luckily this year’s winner David Cook and the second finalist David Archuleta had the highest iTune sales. And it is not too presumptuous of me to assume (because of past sales) that both David’s will sell very well once their album is released bmorebamma said:
btw why fantasia gets crapped on all the time is anyones guess, IF YOU DON’T LISTEN TO R&B radio you won’t hear her i just hate narrow minded people know matter who they are , i hear her all the time, she is recording her 3rd cd btw and i don’t hear her complaning, r&b stations are smaller than pop. country, etc. she was a big hit in the play the color purple , whom oprah PERSONALLY HAND PICKED FOR THE ROLE THAT SHE GOT. iam a afrcian amercian who enjoys ALL music so when the nit picking starts my blood boils. I agree with bmorebamma. Take a look at Fantasia’s numbers, you’d be surprised. She’s mentioned in the same breath as Taylor Hicks because she doesn’t really put out songs for the pop-top 40 stations. But everybody in the r&b world knows who Fantasia is, and she is extremely respected among her peers. Within her own genre, she is one of the most successful Idol winners, not one of the least successful. Kevin said:
Regardless of the numbers, nobody knows who Fantasia is. Dale said:
I think it’s very annoying for someone to supposedly quote another person and get the quote wrong! If you’re going to be bold enough to say something is the quote, spend the time to make sure your quote is what was said. Simon did not say”….but you’re going to sell millions of records”, he said “…you will sell more records than any pervious Idol winner”. As of now Kelly and Carrie are close to the same album sells but Kelly has 3 albums and Carrie only has 2. Eventually, Carrie will out sell Kelly’s numbers. Lee said:
Actually Dale, you are wrong, her quote is correct. Carrie Underwood covered Heart’s “Alone” during one of the “Idol” episodes, and it was such an amazing performance that Simon Cowell said to her, “I’m going to make a prediction: you are not only to win this competition, but you’re going to sell millions of records”. Acutally, I stand corrected, I did see on a different website that your quote is correct. |
