Yesterday there was buzz about a brand new Nine Inch Nails song getting radio airplay. Two things to note here… a brand new NIN non-instrumental song, and there is still a radio presence who plays Nine Inch Nails and people still listen to terrestrial radio to hear new music?! It’s also very interesting to know that a label-less band, albeit very well-established act, can get a new song played in a sea of the same Nickelback and Staind songs on modern rock and alternative radio.

After the song was released to radio it appeared via blog post directly from Trent Reznor on nin.com as an easily download-able MP3 file, only requesting your email address (reasonable) and ZIP (reasonable). No other hoops. You could assume that ZIP would be used to do demographic targeting once NIN tourdates go on sale.

But seriously, in a world of DRM, long web registration processes involving your soul and DNA and credit card verification codes, the ability to see past all that and realize that nickel and dime-ing kids for their $.89 / $.99 cents should be applauded. Not to mention bypassing any lame marketing plans, staggered releases across territories, begging Trent for a B-side for the Brazilian single release that a major label would have at the ready to release new art.

Enough about distribution. Is the song good? Oh, yes it is.

This is the beauty of artists like Trent Reznor. He wants fans to hear and enjoy the song, without the other bullcrap that most online music downloads bring about. I may be biased, as a NIN fan, but it makes me happy.
