A rare occurrence happened this week within the music industry.  Two major releases, both sophomore albums, from The Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley came out without much pre-release fanfare.  They both just “showed up in stores” and online for streaming and download.

In an industry which prides itself on certain people getting to hear the music months ahead of others and critics needing to hear songs very early on to meet their publishing deadlines, it is very rare for no one to hear music from such major groups beyond the musicians themselves and their people.

Both groups have said they wanted everyone to experience the songs at the same time worldwide, as opposed to poor digital leaks and early spoiler reviews occurring as they usually do.

Will this set a precedent or is the industry too ingrained in the old ways of setting up a record?
