Where have all the rockstars goneBy
David
To see R.E.M. very late last night was a reminder of what the rockstar is. The word is not easily definable and cannot be summed up by a simple description or visual or video. Michael Stipe on stage is captivating… you cannot easily take your eyes off him. You could argue that he does not hold one of the great singing voices… so what is it? In an age where people in khaki’s doing spreadsheets are referred to “rockstars” if they work past 9pm (I even received a business card this week where someone’s title was “rockstar”), it could be said that music has lost some of its allure simply because the rockstar as we know it is far and few between. It has also become watered down, being both an energy drink and a level in multiple video games. But how often do you get the sensation of thinking, “wow… I’m watching a rockstar” or simply a “star”. There are a million bands and artists right now and with self-publishing, music distribution is no longer an issue. But with that, what is talent… what is a rockstar? Must you earn it? Does it start from the beginning?
To hear classic songs like “Fall On Me” and “Electrolite” (during which I was grabbed into an impromtu sing-a-long and sway session with two fans) was invigorating. Yes, there are many bands and artists playing this week… but the reality is that not much of the music will be memorable to the audience hours afterward or will make you want to pump your fist during the show itself. It could be the newness of the music… it may be that it takes a certain chemistry to move people. And it doesn’t always happen out of the gate… so many household name bands have broken only on their third or fourth album. But many people in the music business have financial attention deficit disorder. The show itself featured a good number of songs from their forthcoming album, Accelerate. The band admitted to the crowd that these songs are really short, so not to worry. Very Ramones-esque. One of the new songs, “Houston”, evolved from a comment a certain Bush made about people from damaged areas shifting to Laredo, Galveston and Houston post-Katrina. The new songs received a warm reception, but the joy was in the air upon hearing songs like “Drive”, “Man on the Moon” and “The Great Beyond”. Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck were joined by the ex-drummer from the industrial band Ministry on drums and a doppelganger for Jerry Garcia on guitar. Arguably the most-anticipated show of the SXSW festival left the crowd feeling why can’t all bands inspire like this?

Hmmm music distribution is still a bit of a problem. I mean at least to get people to take the time of day to look at it is a problem. One that several of my friends struggle with on a daily basis. Rockstar to me is the new love. People(I myself am guilty) say they love everything. I love that shirt. I love that band. I love pie. Love love love love love. The word is not nearly as powerful as it once was. Rockstar the same way. It is a drink(not a very good one…well the guava is but thats just because it was the first one I bought with my debit card) and like you said levels on video games. Everybody fancies themself a rockstar but when there are true rockstars its undeniable and nobody can dispute it. Some people are gods of rock….I seem to gone of on a tangent again. Sorry. Matt said:
No no no Appelman…no tangent…loved your continuation of David’s very fine post. Me…I’m just a very jealous S.O.B. knowing that he got to see R.E.M. last night at SXSW whilst I slave away in an office building in front of a computer….No, I am not a kaki clad rock star. But alas, I do have Biolog and the good loving community of JamsBio to keep me company. Let’s be clear though: Michael Stipe is a Rock Star…it’s in his DNA. Let us revel in his double helix. I like your review a lot David. But I do think that Stipe does have one of the greatest voices. You are right he is very captivating and I’ve seen the band 20 times so far and each time it’s an amazing 2 hours. Michael has this mysterious way of making each audience member feel like he’s singing just to them. I’ve never felt more of a connection with any other singer before. R.E.M Sucks said:

Where are the rockstars gone? Sweden! Mando Diao, Sugarplum Fairy, The Hives always are great live performance. And btw, there are plenty American and British bands that apply to “rockstar”. Bruce said:
I think it has been resplendent seeing REM gradually becoming rockstars, especially Michal Stipe, before my eyes. Having seen them first around 1983 in concert with 10,000 Maniacs up until 2004(?) at Red Rocks with Wilco. I have admired their support acts over the years. Music I may have not heard otherwise. (To the person who said REM sucks - why even be on this site if you don’t like them. I don’t get it.) I think they had a big influence on the resurgence of Leonard Cohen’s career in the early 90’s. Having said that, I believe they have that elusive “IT” that creates a Rockstar. The End. Shauna said:
I couldn’t agree more. Where is the next real performer going to come from these days when most folks don’t stick around long enough for an encore? Susanna said:
R.E.M.Sucks? well, I have never known a band more powerful, more able to give an emotion through their songs…I have had like anyone so many disappointing, awful moments in my life and what gave me back the hope was just this band taht “sucks”. So what? Michael has the greatest voice ever, and really, I don’t like Britney Spears, so I do not visit homepages to comment on her. Cheers. kgld nkfwg said:
