So it appears that North Korea is suddenly becoming a must-visit locale for any musician’s world tour. Well, baby steps. The NY Philharmonic recently made history by becoming the first major US musicians to play in North Korea. And now Slow Hand himself, Eric Clapton, has been invited to play what has been known as part of the “axis of evil”. Will North Korean kids go around spray painting “Clapton is God” all over the capital city? Will Clapton place “Cocaine” & “I Shot The Sheriff” on his setlist? The rumor is that Kim Jong Chol, the son of the Team America lampooned Kim Jong-il, is a big Clapton fan. One can only assume he was exposed to Western music while in boarding school in Switzerland. Clapton has supposedly agreed to the performance “in principle” sometime in 2009, but will we see any other Western performances in a land where people have not been exposed to such cultural phenomenons as Miley Cyrus and her alter-ego (two passports?), Jimmy Buffet (is there a Korean equivalent of a margarita? ) and Gallagher (perhaps relations will become less icy under the influence of watermelon smashing). |
