On this day in 2002, one of the staples of Las Vegas, Elton John, accused the music industry of exploiting young singers and dumping talented artists for manufactured groups. He said “There are too many average and mediocre acts; it damages real talent getting airplay. It’s just fodder.”

Was Elton just upset that day that he couldn’t find his duck costume (cocaine… helluva of a drug) or was he speaking for many people who are disenchanted with what is considered “music” these days on radio and television? If you had a label, which artists would you sign?

Regarding Elton John, I’m gonna say it’s a little from Column A, and a little from Column B. Damn duck costume went missing again.

But he was also right. As listeners, we’ve become too used to artists that aren’t really talented at all, and we’ve become too accepting of that. If it’s over-produced and marketable, that seems good enough now. It’s pretty sad.

I would sign artists that love what they do, have passion, drive, and obviously talent. The ones that will play their music wherever and whenever, not necessarily because they’re getting paid, but because they WANT to play it, and can.

Kris10 has it right…if I were the big record exec (isn’t that an anachronism nowadays???) me and a small Army of passionate music lovers would hit clubs the world over all 24/7/365, find those artists who ignite a following…who the people love…take those artists and promote them, let them tour.

Looking for good music on the radio and television? That’s one of the problems, the copycat, all or nothing mentality of the labels. When labels use Dawson Creek and the OC as A&R tools you get what you get … I can’t wait to see which bands gets promoted on the new Knight Rider. In the fantasy world where labels still mean something I would sign Foo Fighters, Bjork and the most underrated band ever Arnold; talented artists who write their own material or at least know how to play their own instruments. As they say in the old days “artists with legs”.
