Last night, part of the JamsBio crew ventured out to the multiplex to see the U23D IMAX film. The reviews have all been very positive so we had high expectations going in… and they were met. Having seen U2’s Vertigo show on which the film was based, it may actually be better than the real thing in many ways. There was a sensation of being on the stage, and at times even being in the band. The sound was immersing and cleaner than what is possible live. The filming itself did not neglect the joyous South American crowd while they gave all their energy to the four Irish fellows on stage. There was something about leaving the venue not reeking of warm beer and happy that the world’s tallest man wasn’t standing in front of you the whole time. There’s nothing quite like the energy of a show and the sensation when the lights go down… but 3D IMAX highlighted the good parts of a concert and the bad ones weren’t represented.

Of course, with a budget of millions of dollars and skilled, visionary professionals creating the experience, it is not something which can manifest just any show into a 3D IMAX experience. In fact, there is the idea of what other bands not only deserve such treatment, but who will be filling the stadiums of tomorrow? Let’s see… The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis… notice a trend? Green Day is a stretch. Radiohead puts on a fantastic & moving live show, but while they have a very loyal following, stadiums seem out of reach.

For those with the power, please no 3D Margaritaville.

Yep, it was pretty enjoyable – although I really wanted to scream and clap a few times, but then remembered I was in a…shhhhhhh…cinema. I with you: who could a) consistently fill stadiums plus b) be worth seeing in a 3D film in a cinema? Afraid you won’t like my answer…the only one I can think of is Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana. Just what does this say about the state of super artists vs. super brands?
