We Want It AllBy

Just in time for the Superbowl, another provocative Janet Jackson image, this time from the cover of her new album. Janet, just do us a favor and remake Rhythm Nation. Seth Godin recently wrote an interesting blog entry about entitled “How much for digital?” In a nutshell, he says that digital media (rental movies, precisely) should be priced close to zero, but not completely free. The habit of people putting a token in a jar will overcome piracy simply because there is now no real reason to pirate. But I think if you ask anyone who pirates media, often times it’s not because you want, but because you can. People simply hoard digital media on nearly limitless drives hooked up to all-you-can-eat bandwith because all the vendors involved make it possible.
For some people, half the fun of YouTube and cruising P2P networks is finding material which isn’t even for sale. That random remix, once-in-a-lifetime collaborative live track (The Arcade Fire backing up Bruce Springsteen on a recent tour date), a Japanese-only B-side from a vinyl pressing of an album. If the people with the rights to such material could get it together and make those nuggets digital, revenue streams would come out of the ether for many. |
